Forty questions, answered straight

One paragraph each. Where the honest answer is "that is not ours to say", that is what it says.

What it is

What is ThreadProof?
ThreadProof turns phone screenshots of a conversation into a single numbered PDF with a cover sheet, page numbers, optional redactions and an appendix listing a SHA-256 fingerprint of every original file. It runs entirely in your browser.
Does ThreadProof upload my screenshots?
No. Images are read, hashed, stitched, redacted and written into the PDF by JavaScript running on your own device. The only time a file leaves your browser is if you deliberately use the Professional email-delivery feature or save a copy to a cloud drive you choose.
Do I need an account?
No account is needed to build and export a free packet. An account is only required for a paid plan, so your subscription can follow you between devices.
Which messaging apps does it work with?
Any of them. ThreadProof works from screenshots, so iMessage, SMS, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram, Signal, Telegram, Slack, Teams, dating apps and email all work the same way. Professional adds direct import of a WhatsApp .txt export and of PDF pages.
Does ThreadProof retype or edit my messages?
No. We don't retype your messages. Each screenshot is placed as an image, so nothing is paraphrased, auto-corrected or re-worded. The only pixels we change are the redaction boxes you draw yourself.
What is in the exported PDF?
A cover page with your case name, parties, date range and declaration; the screenshots, one per page or stitched into a continuous thread; a redaction log if you redacted anything; and an appendix listing each original filename, size, dimensions and SHA-256 fingerprint.
What is a SHA-256 fingerprint and why is it there?
It is a 64-character value computed from the exact bytes of a file. Anyone holding the original screenshot can recompute it and see whether their copy is identical to the one you exported. It says nothing about what happened before the screenshot was taken. Read the glossary entry.

Using it

How do I get my screenshots off my phone?
Three common routes: build the packet on the phone itself in the phone's browser, AirDrop or share the images to a computer, or upload them to your own cloud drive and download them on the computer. ThreadProof works on a phone browser, so the first route usually takes the least time.
How many screenshots can I include?
The free tier exports up to 8 screenshots per packet. Paid plans have no per-packet limit; the practical ceiling is your device's memory, which in testing means several hundred images.
What is stitching?
Consecutive screenshots of a scrolling conversation usually overlap. Stitching finds the repeated band of pixels and joins the images into one continuous thread, so the same three messages do not appear twice. You can adjust each seam by hand.
Can I cover up a phone number or a child's name?
Yes. Draw a box over anything on the Redact tab and pick a label such as Phone number or Third-party name. The box is drawn into the image pixels before the PDF is written, so there is no layer on top for a recipient to remove, and every box is counted in a redaction log.
Can I reorder screenshots?
Yes: drag them, use the arrows on each thumbnail, hold Alt with the left and right arrow keys, or press Sort by filename to fall back to the order your phone named them in.
What are the four export profiles?
Court is a formal layout with wide margins and a declaration. Lawyer adds a bundle with the original files and a hashes.txt. Email produces a smaller file for sending. Print is optimised for paper. Free accounts get Court and Email.
Can I import a screen recording instead of screenshots?
Yes. Drop in a screen recording of you scrolling the thread and ThreadProof extracts distinct frames on your device, discards near-duplicates, and treats each kept frame as a screenshot with its own fingerprint.
Does it work offline?
Yes, after the first visit. The app is cached by a service worker, and because nothing is uploaded, building and exporting a packet works with no connection at all.
Can I come back to a case later?
Yes. Cases are stored in your browser's local database on that device. They are not synced anywhere, so use the backup zip if you plan to switch devices or if your browser clears local data.
What happens if I clear my browser data?
The cases stored on that device are gone, because they exist nowhere else. Export the PDF or a backup zip as soon as a case matters to you.
Is there a limit on file size?
Individual images up to 25 MB are accepted. Very large sets are limited by your device's memory rather than by us.
Can two screenshots of the same page be detected?
Yes. On import, an image whose fingerprint already exists in the case is skipped with a note, so the same page is not exhibited twice by accident.

Plans and billing

What does ThreadProof cost?
Personal is $9 per month or $79 per year. A one-time Case Pass is $24 for 90 days. Professional is $49 per month or $439 per year. There is also a free tier with no account. See the pricing page.
What is the difference between the free tier and Personal?
Free exports up to 8 screenshots, gives you the Court and Email profiles, and puts a small ThreadProof mark on image pages. Personal removes the mark, removes the per-packet limit, and unlocks every profile and the lawyer bundle.
What is a Case Pass?
A one-time payment of $24 that unlocks everything in Personal for 90 days and then simply stops. It does not renew and there is nothing to cancel.
What does Professional add?
Your organisation name and logo on the cover page, Matters with a running Bates counter, exhibit labels A to ZZ, saved declaration templates, PDF and WhatsApp .txt import, a searchable text layer with a CSV transcript, emailing the packet to yourself or someone else, AI Packet Review, and priority support.
How do I cancel?
Open your Account page and press Cancel. It takes two taps, the cancel button is at the top, and access continues to the end of the period you already paid for.
What is the money-back policy?
Fourteen days, any plan, any reason. Email support and we return the last charge. Read the policy.
Who processes payments?
Paddle acts as the merchant of record. Your card details are entered into Paddle's hosted checkout and never reach ThreadProof's servers. Your statement will show a Paddle descriptor.
Do you offer team seats?
Not yet. Professional is a single-user plan today. Multi-seat is on the post-launch list; email support if that is what you need and we will tell you where it stands.

Privacy and security

Can ThreadProof staff read my messages?
No, because your screenshots never reach us. There is no bucket of customer images to read, subpoena or breach.
What data do you actually hold?
An account email if you make one, subscription state from Paddle, usage counters such as how many exports you ran, and standard request logs. Never your screenshots or the text inside them. Read the privacy policy.
Do you use my data to train AI?
No. AI Packet Review sends only the structured checklist metadata you approve, and no model provider is permitted to train on it.
What happens when I email a packet to someone?
That is the one deliberate exception to keeping everything local. The PDF is uploaded so the mail provider can attach it, we log the recipient domain rather than the address, and the file is deleted after delivery.
Do you sell personal information?
No. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising, and we honour Global Privacy Control signals for advertising measurement.
How do I delete my account?
Account, then Delete account. Everything tied to the account is removed. Cases stored in your browser are separate: use Wipe this device to clear those.

The packet

Will a court accept a ThreadProof PDF?
That is not ours to say, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Courts, employers and insurers decide for themselves. What we can tell you is what the file contains: unaltered screenshot images, page numbers, a declaration in your own words, a redaction log, and a fingerprint for each source file.
What is on the cover page?
Case or matter name, the parties if you enter them, the date range, the number of screenshots, the export profile, the date of export, and your declaration text with a signature line and optional witness line.
Can I put my own logo on it?
Yes, on Professional. The organisation name and logo appear on the cover page and in the running header.
Can the PDF be searched for text?
On Professional, yes. Text recognition runs in a worker on your device and writes an invisible text layer under each image, so search and copy work while the visible pixels stay untouched. A cover note records that the layer was machine-generated and may contain errors.
How are pages numbered?
Page x of y on every page, plus an exhibit label if you set one, plus a continuation note when a stitched thread runs across several pages, plus a per-page count of redactions when there are any.
Can I add exhibit numbers like Exhibit A?
Yes. Set an exhibit label on the Label tab. Professional adds automatic labels from A to ZZ across a Matter and a running Bates counter with your own prefix.
