Bates numbering
A unique sequential identifier stamped on every page of a document production.
Bates numbering stamps a unique identifier on every page of a document set, typically a prefix, a separator, and a zero-padded number such as SMITH-000123. The counter runs across the whole production and never restarts.
It differs from ordinary page numbering, which restarts inside each document. Bates numbers let two people refer to exactly the same page out of thousands, which is why they are used when documents are exchanged between parties.
